On another blog, I read this quote attributed to Syracuse Head Coach Jim Boeheim:
“Nobody gets better if you just say: ‘please work hard’. You have to push the players. That’s the only way that they are going to get better.”
I’d offer a different perspective. If the player needs to be pushed – that is, if he is externally motivated – he is not ready to be a great player. Great players are internally motivated.
